The key aspects that define the Academic Year program at private schools in the United States of America are: prestige, tradition, the highest academics and qualified teachers, and state of the art facilities. In this section you will find all the private schools with homestay in the USA program details. For the boarding schools program you can find all the information at the following section: Boarding schools in the USA program.

The program includes the selected areas of New Hampshire, New York, Florida and Arizona.

Every school is located in very safe environments about 1 hour away from the mayor cities of each area: New York City, Boston, Orlando and Phoenix.

We have visited in person every single catholic school selected for this program, and all of them emphasize the student’s academic performance with a wide range of the highest level classes with different options like Honors, or Advance Placement subjects. Combined with state of the art sport, music and art facilities, the program provides a top level education for the students.

Regarding the classes, each student usually selects around 5 core subjects (History, English, Mathematics, Philosophy, Physics, Chemistry…) according to their interests, and then they choose 1-2 additional subjects among many elective options such as movie and tv production, engineering, sport medicine, anatomy, web design, fashion design, robotics, and more. Besides subjects, the students also get to join many different clubs of all kinds as an alternative to the academic subjects they choose.

Based on their English level, each school offers free ESL classes (English as a Second Lenguage), where students are taught in even smaller class sizes and reduced groups to improve their proficiency quickly to secure the best academic results.

As always in our trips and schools visits, we got to supervise every single aspect of the centers and verify they all meet the highest expectacions. All the schools offer cutting edge academic facilities like science labs, interactive boards, 3D printers or laser cuts to improve the student’s results and encourage a very practical and interactive academic system (not based only in memorization). This includes individual presentations, teamwork experiments and research proyects that enable students to get out of their comfort zone and develop their personalities, confidence and academic strenghts while promoting different debates and approaches for each particular class and topic.

In order to guarantee every school we promote fulfil the highest quality standards, I have personally visited each one of the centers and carefully selected a list with the best ones of each destination. Our selection of schools only includes the ones that provide the best facilities, academics, sports, music and arts programs. I have verified it after meeting with the schools responsibles and talked with current students about their experiences there and their level of satisfaction. At the travel blog you will find specific reports of each of my visits to each school in every destination.

    Campus

The program offers a completely American Experience with over 90% American students in each school and around 10% international students so the immersion in the North American culture and the academic system is guaranteed.

All host families are carefully chosen and the priority is always selecting the ideal family for the candidate’s profile and interests: families with or without children, with another international student, with similar sports interests, weekend activities, trips, etc.

Graduation in North America, 11th and 12th grade:

In North America (United States and Canada), there are two options to earn the graduation, always studying the last two years at the same school:

    1. American System. 11th and 12th grade. The students usually take around 6-7 subjects each year. This system allows students to choose the level of each subject according to their strenghts with high level options like Honors or Advanced Placement subjects. This AP subjects even allow students to earn University credits for their first year in College. Once the students graduate, they can choose between studying University in the United States or Canada, or return to their home countries and study their degrees there.
    2. International Baccalaureate. Regarding the IB, the student must study the 2 years at the same school since they take the same 6 subjects during 2 courses. Each subjects must belong to a different field (literature, mathematics, sciences, social sciences, lenguage and arts). The IB is recognized by many contries and grants automatic access to the Universities. Some students can additionally take the University access exams to earn a higher score.

    Classes

The academic program fees include several weekend activities with no extra cost called American Experience (aquí está mal en la versión actual en español y hay que poner American Experience en lugar de Academic Experience), that allow students to participate in all kinds of field trips, visits to major cities, amusement parks, NBA games, American Football games, theaters, snow trips, beach trips, etc.

This program allows students to return back home to their countries for Christmas break and spring break, but if they wish to stay during the entire academic program those holidays with the American host family are all included without any extra cost. According to our experience it’s also highly recommended the students stay during the entire length of the program since it would be the only chance the students ges to spend those holidays in America as a member of the family.

The student’s parents can also visit them in the USA any time they want during the academic year and spend some time getting to know the area, school, host family and close cities like New York, Boston, Orlando and Phoenix. They just need to inform us ahead of  time so the host family and the school are aware they will be visiting and we can arrange the needed transfers and meetings with teachers, coaches and principal to check on the academic and sports performance of the candidate.

The program includes two meals during the week with the host family, breakfast and dinner. For lunch, the schools offer their own menu for around 6$ a day (not included). During the weekends, the students will have lunch as well with the host family.

    Environment

The program offers a wide range of opportunities in sports and extracurricular activities according to the interests of each candidate: soccer, tennis, swimming, lacrosse, golf, basketball, baseball and rowing are just a few examples offered.

The selection of schools International Academic Programs promotes allows students to participate in 3 different sports during the academic year. Each season offers different sports so students get to practice up to 3 different specialities. During fall, they get to play soccer, field hockey or golf for example, while in winter they practice indoor sports like swimming, basketball, volleyball or indoor soccer among other outside options like ski or snowbarding. In Spring, once the weather is warm again, the students get to play tennis, lacrosse, track and field or even sailing.

For clubs and extracurricular options, students can participate in many different programs like arts, movie and tv production, music, chorus, drama, culinary arts, web design, virtual reality, and video game design, among many others.

    Sports

    12th grade.

For 12th grade candidates (the last academic year before college, 17-18 years old), also called senior students, they must indicate in advance and before applying if their idea is studying the university in the United States of America after graduation, or if they will study it at their own countries back home. Some schools may allow students to graduate in one year, (it would depend on the subjects studied during the last academic years) but others have specific requirements towards graduation and would require to study more than one academic year. In order to secure the graduation and several college acceptances in the USA, we always recomend if possible studying the last 2-3 academic years in the USA: 10th, 11th and 12th grade.

    Extracurricular activities

    Ages

7th grade (12 years old) to 12th grade (18 years old). Possibility of studying the PG program (Post Graduate, 19-20 years old) for students who have finished their 12th grade in their own countries and want to study the academic year program in the United States before studying college or university
