After my arrival I was suprised to see where the school was located since it was in a mountain area with just a few houses in the town. The school entire campus is actually most of the town.

At the beginning I wasn’t used to it since in Spain I live in a big city, but once you are shettled, you realize the school is the perfect place for quiet students and ideal to study and gain the best possible results since there are no distractions around the campus.

The school arranges all kinds of nature activities like going kayaking on the Androscoggin river on Maine Day or hiking to a close island at the Acadia National Park, among many others.

During the weekends you have also lots of options and trips available like going to the movies with friends, to the mall, karting, visit art galleries or even community service options.

Regarding sports there are also many different nature related ones like mountain biking or cross country, but for the first term I have chosen soccer.

Acedemically the school is very demanding since we are only 250 students and the teachers give you a very personalized treatment, so you get all the help you need.

I’m very excited about the upcoming winter season so we can go skiing and for the release of the first term grades!

My dream is studying in an Ivy League University when I graduate and I have to work very hard to achive it.

There are many international students at my school so I have friends from all over the world. Everybody is very friendly and even though the first days everybody is kind of shy, after a little while you start making lots of friends. It’s very important to have a good relation since you live with them at the dorms.

We oftenly go to the movies since the school arranges all kind of activities during the weekends and drive you anywhere you want to go if you gather a small group of friends to join. It can be to the movies, the mall, restaurants or trips to the beach, about 15 minutes from the school.

My favourite is of course Deerfield beach since there is always young people and lots of things to do like surfing, playing volleyball , going to restaurants and shopping at the stores.

Regarding sports, this season I have joined the cheerleader squad and I love it. Joining sports and clubs is one of the best ways to make friends and get involved with the school. We always cheer at every game and the crowd loves it.

One the American traditions I liked the most is the Honor Pining Day, since that day every new student receives a school pin and there is even a ceremony at the chapel. For those days everybody is dressed up.

Also, every single year, each sport team celebrates a ceremony in honor of the Senior students (12th grade students graduating that year) at the Senior Night party.

Another weekend activity I love to do is visiting the Wynwood Walls, an urban art gallery located in downton Miami. The school arranged a field trip there where we spent the day enjoying the city, which I love.

About the classes, we always have 10 minute periods between them which are great to catch up with friends and see how they are doing academically.

Other American tradtion I also loved was the Homecoming week. Every day there is a new theme and you have to dress in a certain way. We where the Jungle Juniors and being part of the Pep Rally is also a lot of fun since you meet a lot of new people.

We have just finished playing the last two games of the season and now it’s time to start a new one and choose a different sport!

María, 10th grade private schools with host family in New York

Borja Pérez-Mínguez | Testimonials North America

I was very nervous when I arrived at the school since I didn’t know what to expect, but at the same time I was excited about how the experience was going to be and the very first day of school I met lots of people I’m still friends with today

Everybody helped me shettling in since day one, the American students, and the international students. They all showed me the school and really helped me regarding schedules, classes, teachers, etc.

What I love most about my school was how fun the classes were and also that they were all only 40 minutes long so you never get bored. Also, every day you have free periods, which mean free hours during the school day you can use to study, eat and hang out with friends.

My school has a library and it’s very useful since you can borrow books anytime you want as long as you return them of course. They also have many computers if you need to do some project, essay or even to print your homework.

Regarding activities and clubs, my school offers many options. I highly recommend it to make new friends, practice English and getting involved with the Americans. You also live a new experience since the sports in the United States are taken very seriously and many students receive important scholarships for athletes.

There are many American traditions I loved like Homecoming. It was in October and it’s crazy! They put a lot of time and effort to prepare it and there are parties, dances, lots of food, and the biggest American Football match of the year! I had a great time during Homecoming and made lots of friends.

They also celebrate Halloween big time and it’s by far one of my favourite experiences since they prepare it for months and everybody loves the spirit of the holidays, they decorate the houses, dress up in costumes and you get a lot of free food! I loved all the different candy you can get! I highly recommend you make the most of it since is one of the most fun American traditions.

Regarding the host families, I think they really help you mature and grow as a person. The American families are always there for you and help you with anything you need. They are your family for an entire year! My experience has been very positive. My host sisters were a year older and a year younger than me and they have really helped me with the school and everyhing I needed. They are always going to be there for you and help you getting involved in every aspect.

I highly recommend the experience of studying one year at the United States since even though at the beginning is hard to be away from family and friends, it really helps you to open your mind, get to know many cultures and people from different countries you will be friends for all your life, from China to Italy, and of course you learn English, crucial aspect for our work future.

I have grown very much as a person this year because it’s like living alone without your own family and you learn to do things on your own, which is hard at the beginning, but very fulfilling at the end and you really enjoy the experience.

About the weather at the United States it’s really different from one area to another. I have lived in New York (Long Island) and winter here is very cold since you are close to the ocean, so you get plenty of snow.

I have also travelled a lot during my academic year and I have visited Florida and Los Angeles (California). I really loved both states and they are very different from New York so you get to compare different environments. I really recommend it if you get the chance to travel to other areas.

New York is one of the most outstanding states in America since you get everything you want like mountains to ski, beaches to hang out, and of course the city of New York, Manhattan and Times Square.

For me New York city is one of the best since there are always things to do like visit the Empire State, walk through Central Park, go shopping at the Soho and Chelsea Market, having lunch at Little Italy…

If you have the chance to live this experience go ahead and live it!

Mateo, 10th grade boarding schools in the United States, New England

Borja Pérez-Mínguez | Testimonials North America, Testimonios Estados Unidos internados

I arrived at the school on August 17th, very tired and missing Spain already. I went straight to my room to sleep for the jet lag and I couldn’t really see the campus.

The next day I was able to see the entire school and I was impressed by the facilities and how big it is. The people here is very nice and as soon as you start to get to know everybody you become like a family. Each day you forget about your life in your own country and enjoy more your life in the United States. Sometimes you miss the food in Spain, but you get used to the American food.  My school is very friendly specially with people from Spain or South America.

When the classes start you have to choose your subjects. I always recommend piano or guitar since you learn to play new instruments and it’s a very easy A.

Once the academic year begins, you start to make more American friends who live in the area with their families, and they invite you to their houses, drive you around, invite you to their parties (without alcohol of course), take you to the movies, etc.

The teachers are also very nice with international students and they are always intrigued by our different cultures since each country is unique in it’s own way.

I have really improved my English compared to the level I had in Spain and once you have a solid base, the rest will be easy.

One of the other thinks I like the most about my school is that is located in a town with everything you need so you get to go to restaurants, supermarkets, shops and anything you need.

The weekend activities are also great with trips to Boston and Portland, amusement parks, going to the movies, good restaurantes, rafiting, etc. Many different options to join.

About the dorms and roomates, for me the most important thing was making friends at my dorm since you go to their room, they visit yours, you play together board games, Playsitation, ping pong… You meet people from other countries and they eventually become your family.

My favourite dorm is the most modern, but the others are also great.

The roomates are also very important to improve your English and help you with your homework and if you share similar interests you become friends very fast.

Studying away for one year or longer is an incredible experience that makes you more mature, responsible, neat and helps you keep your room tidy.

The more important thing you will learn is to appreciate your home since you never appreciate something until you lose it (for one year!).

Alea, 10th grade public schools in Canada, Newfoundland

Borja Pérez-Mínguez | Testimonials North America, Testimonios Canadá

I arrived in Canada on September 4th and my Canadian family was waiting for me at the airport.

My host mother loves to cook, try new recipes and talks a lot! My host father is also very nice and likes to joke. He also likes the woodshop, in fact he has made himself most of the furniture at the house. They have 3 sons, 24, 28 and 29 years old. They all live at their own places.

Here every house has a different color, there are red ones, blue ones, green ones, yellow ines, white ones, etc. My house is located in a very safe and quiet neighbourhood. It has 3 bedrooms, one bathroom, the kitchen and the living room. There is another floor downstairs and it has been shaped into an independent apartment. Every house also has a backyard and most of them have barbacues. There is also a little garden with plants in spring and summer.

My school is about 15 minutes away by school bus, and it’s huge, it has 4 floors!

The labs are at the first floor, as well as the cafeteria, culinary arts classes, principal office, music rooms, drama class and some soundproof rooms for students to practice with their instruments. At the second floor you can find the science classes, (physics, biology, chemistry, etc), and at the third floor you have the lenguage classes with English, French, Spanish and German.

There are many lockers in every hallway and mine is at the third floor, but I changed it for another in the first one since most of my classes are on the first floor. It took me a while to learn how to open the locker since we don’t have those in Spain and the first weeks my friends had to open it for me, but eventually I learned how to use it, just like in the movies.

The classes start at 9h and finish around 15h. Every class takes about one hour and we get a recess after the two first ones. Lunch is at 12h and we get around 45 minutes. One thing I really liked was the school gave granola bars, fruits and juice to everyone who didn’t have time for breakfast.

The first day of school there is a list on the wall with your name on it and it tells you where to go. This is your homeroom and that teacher is your tutor. In every class you have a different group of classmates according to the subjects you choose. I had healthy living, French, phyisics, drama, English, science and mathematics.

That same day I met all the international students and the school staff told us the school bus stop we had to use to get here from our houses. At the bus I met a student from Tenerife and we became close friends until December since she was just staying for 4 months.

During the first weekend, our organization arranged an activity for all the international students so we could all meet and also to introduce us to our coordinators. We made lots of friends that day and everybody was very friendly. We went to the beach, had a bonfire and ate hot dogs and marshmallows.

In winter they also took us for a ski trip. You could choose between skiing and snowboarding and I had a great time. If you didn’t know how to do it you could take classes and if you knew, you could ski on your own.

At the school there are many extracurricular activities, clubs and sports and they are played in different seasons. You can play football, soccer, basketball, ping pong, frisbee, cheerleading, chorus, etc. I joined the cheerleading squad and the chorus.

With the cheerleaders we won first place at a competition in our category. There were many schools and clubs and we won! We had two performances, one on the morning and another that same afternoon. The award is a medal and a banner we got to sign and hang at the school’s gym. It was a great experience!

Another tradition I really liked was Halloween. Everybody decorates their houses and gardens with pumpkins, spider webs, ghosts, etc. I wen with my host family to a farm to buy our own pumpkins and it was great since you can pick the one you like the most, empty it and draw a face on it. In Spain I had a little bag for Halloween for trick or treat, but here I had to use my pillow case since we got a lot of candy and chocolate bars!! My costume was a gothic girl and I went with y friends later to a Halloween party arranged by the organization with pleny of food and music and it was a lot of fun. I love the energy and spirit they put into it!

Another tradition my host family celebrated was Eastern since a lot of friends and family joined us for dinner at home. We had turkey and whe I woke up I found chocolate eggs all over the house. My friend’s host families also gave me a lot of chocolates that day. They also celebrate the May 24th weekend with parties, picnics and eating with friends and family. I love how close they all are!

In March, my family from Spain invited me to New York for a week and I loved it since it was very close from Newfoundland. I flew to Toronto (3 hours) and then New York (2 hours). I really loved New York city since it’s just like in the movies. I took a lot of photos there!

Regarding the process of studying abroad, I had been thinking about it for years and once I asked my parents about it we started looking for agencies in Madrid. I was very excited and two of my friends were also going to study abroad. We found this company, International Academic Programs very close to our home and choose Canada for my program.

My mother was afraid because it was an entire year away (I flew to Madrid for Christmas holidays)  but eventually my father and I could convince her into it since I was sure it was going to be a great experience, I was going to be able to learn English, meet new cultures, people, etc. We chose Newfoundland because it was the closest province from Europe and the time difference was just 4.5 hours.

At the end of the academic year, returning to Spain was hard for me. I was very excited to see again everybody, but I knew I was really going to miss my life in Canada. It didn’t take long for me to adapt again to the schedule in Spain because it was already summer.

I really recommend studying one year abroad because it teaches you to appreciate everything you have, your family, your friends, your house, and really helps you growing up and mature. I have met incredible people who will be my friends forever and they are always telling me to visit them.

I regret a little bit not getting involved since the beggining with Canadian students since when you arrive it’s always easier to connect with the international students, but most of them usually stay until for 4 months,, so then you have to open up to the Canadians and I wish I had done it earlier since I made a lot of great friends.

I hope I get to visit back again all my friends in Canada and I have invited them all to visit me here in Madrid, Spain.
