The key aspects that define the Academic Year program at private schools in the United States of America are: prestige, tradition, the highest academics and qualified teachers, and state of the art facilities. In this section you will find all the boarding schools program details. For private schools with homestay you can find all the information at the following section: USA Family

Once we have identified the candidate’s main interests, we will carefully select the perfect school for their profile: mixed or single sex schools, with or without uniform, specialized in academics like STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), business, graphic design, with strong art programs, music options, performing arts, media studies, etc. The same for sports interests like a great soccer team, competitive ski and snowboarding teams, sailing options, swimming, equestrian, or even aviation programs (extra cost) at military boarding schools. We will select the best possible school to fit the student’s main areas of interest.

In order to guarantee every school we promote fulfil the highest quality standards, I have personally visited each one of the centers and carefully selected a list with the best ones of each destination. Our selection of schools only includes the ones that provide the best facilities, academics, sports, music and arts programs. I have verified it after meeting with the schools responsibles and talked with current students about their experiences there and their level of satisfaction. At the travel blog you will find specific reports of each of my visits to each school in every destination.

    Campus

The reduced class sizes (10-15 students) favours a closer and personalized relation between teachers and pupils and allows them to nurture an individual approach with each student so they can guide them through the academic year to master each subject taught. The American academic system is very practical (not based only in memorization) and encourages students to face each other and debate every single day each topic discussed in class. They must actively participate in each subject with the teacher’s mediation and express their points of view in a respectful manner so their self confidence increases daily and promotes their personal growth.

All teachers, staff members, counselors and advisors are highly educated and provide an exhaustive supervision for each student through the academic year in order to guarantee the best possible academic results. Every week, each advisor meets with the assigned students up to 3 times to make sure they reach their full potential.

On top of that every student quickly develops a strong study habit thanks to the daily 2 hours mandatory study hall. These supervised periods of study are guided by teachers and staff members of each boarding school, so the students learn key organizative skills to develope their academic success.

Graduation in North America, 11th and 12th grade:

In North America (United States and Canada), there are two options to earn the graduation, always studying the last two years at the same school:

    1. American System. 11th and 12th grade. The students usually take around 6-7 subjects each year. This system allows students to choose the level of each subject according to their strenghts with high level options like Honors or Advanced Placement subjects. This AP subjects even allow students to earn University credits for their first year in College. Once the students graduate, they can choose between studying University in the United States or Canada, or return to their home countries and study their degrees there.
    2. International Baccalaureate. Regarding the IB, the student must study the 2 years at the same school since they take the same 6 subjects during 2 courses. Each subjects must belong to a different field (literature, mathematics, sciences, social sciences, lenguage and arts). The IB is recognized by many contries and grants automatic access to the Universities. Some students can additionally take the University access exams to earn a higher score.

    Classes

All boarding schools International Academic Programs promotes in the United States have their own Learning Center, with very specialized professionals who help students with all kind of academic needs or learning difficulties like ADD, (Attention Deficit Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hiperactivity Disorder), or Dyslexia. The Learning Center is also used by the most academic and succesful students who want to obtain even better results and learn new organizational skills or how to improve their time management. These new abilities constitue an exponential growth for the student’s self esteem since they see their efforts are rewarded with incredible results.

In order to select the best possible school for the candidate’s profile, it’s essential to get to know their interests in academics, sports, music and art options, weather and environment. Once we have established those key aspects we can select the perfect fit for each student among the school selection we have made over the years after visiting hundreds of top private schools.

New England area, in the east coast, allows students to graduate and study in some of the best Universities and Colleges of the world located in the Boston area, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts or even New York: Yale, Harvard, Columbia MIT, Boston University, Brown, Darmouth, Pennsylvania, etc. Upon arrival, each student is assigned to a College Counselor who will guide them according to the student’s academic performance, chosen career and sport interests. To ensure having a wide range of options, each student usually applies up to 6-10 different colleges and universities to maximaze the number of acceptances.

    Environment

The environment and surroundings of each school’s campus in this area provides an unrivalled setting for students with ski and snowboading interests due to the proximity to top level mountains and resorts. The schools offer different options with competitive programs and almost daily trainings or just recreational clubs to ski once in a while.

For students without ski interests or used to warmer climates there are plenty of other options and areas in the United States with warmer weather and temperature and outside sports all year long. Among these areas we find options like Texas, or with ocean proximity for swimming, surf, marine biology, scuba diving or sailing programs in spectacular beach areas like Hawaii, Florida, (Miami, Palm Beach, Orlando) or California, (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Barbara). All these destinations also offer all kinds of strong academic options like STEM programs (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), environmental sciences, astronomy, etc. In California the students usually apply to technology colleges in order to work in top companies based in Silicon Valley.
There are also options for military boarding schools for parents looking for a more disciplined environment with both mixed and boys only options. Some of them even offer outstanding aviation programs (extra cost) for students who want to become pilots.

For the more adventurous students with strong sailing interests, we have the spectacular alternative of the sailboat across the world program  . This incredible option allows students to live on a boat during the entire academic year and to travel to 20 different countries where they will do all kinds of field work activities for around 10 days each (Italy, Greece, Cuba, Barbados, Norway, USA, South Africa, France, Netherlands, Brazil…) Given the very specific nature of the program, (living on a boat without internet) it only considers very mature candidates between 17-19 years old going to study their 11th, 12th grade or PG programs.

The cost for the academic year program at the private boarding schools in the Unitede States is similar to the cost of America’s top universities, around 45.000$-75.000$ + health insurance (2.000$) + student account (2.000$) + our fees (4.000€ + VAT). For parents with limited budgets some of the schools offer financial aid opportunities and merit scholarships for excelent academic candidates or athletes who can become important assets. Here, at International Academic Programs, we are specialized in securing those financial aids to families with needs can leave the cost of the academic year program in around 35.000$-40.000$ + health insurance (2.000$) + student account (2.000$) + our fees (4.000€ + VAT). Sports

The academic year program at the private boarding schools in the United States undoubtedly offers the widest range of sport, music and art programs with state of the art facilities for every discipline. On top of that, each school invests millions of dollars every year to improve the campus, labs, classes, fields, theaters and gyms, in order to offer cutting edge programs.  We can find spectacular all year round astro turf soccer pitches, tennis courts, technology centers, equestrian centers, golf courses, olympic size pools among many other opportunities.

The sports offered at the boarding schools are played through 3 different seasons and according to the student’s level so each one could play up to 3 different competitive sports during the academic year program. Each season offers different options and for example, in fall students can practice soccer, field hockey or golf among others. In winter time they can practice indoor sports like volleyball or basketball, or mountain related options like ski and snowboarding. Finally during spring they can join tennis, lacrosse or track and field. The sports offered in each season depend on the selected area and specific weather chosen in the United States.

Regarding arts, the schools offer many programs like media studies, movie production, photography, drama, ceramics, painting, audio editing, virtual reality, coding, etc.

For weekend activites the students have many different options like sport competitions, (each team plays every weekend agains other private schools in the area in their respective leagues), movie nights, formal dances, Halloween and Thanksgiving parties, trips to the mall, restaurants, cultural visits, karts, ski trips, paintball, university visits, day trips to major cities, nature options like hiking, kayaking, etc. Every weekend students get to choose the activities they are most interested in.

    12th grade

For 12th grade candidates (the last academic year before college, 17-18 years old), also called senior students, they must indicate in advance and before applying if their idea is studying the university in the United States of America after graduation, or if they will study it at their own countries back home. Some schools may allow students to graduate in one year, (it would depend on the subjects studied during the last academic years) but others have specific requirements towards graduation and would require to study more than one academic year. In order to secure the graduation and several college acceptances in the USA, we always recomend if possible studying the last 2-3 academic years in the USA: 10th, 11th and 12th grade.
